Is a reprieve from the nursing workforce downturn on the horizon? The latest data says ‘yes.’
Hospitals with Magnet® designation are on track to see significant improvements in nurse workforce engagement and other American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) categories by the end of 2022.
New data, released by Press Ganey at the Staffing and Quality Summit ahead of the ANCC National Magnet Conference® in Philadelphia last month, reveals nurse retention improved as much as 10%, resulting in annual savings of up to $2.6M at Magnet organizations.
The data, collected from January through June 2022, highlights improvements in multiple nurse performance areas at Magnet organizations compared to the previous year:
- Engagement scores among Magnet-registered nurses increased from 3.98 (out of 5) in 2021 to 4.10 in 2022.
- In the ANCC category of Leadership Access and Responsiveness, scores for Magnet organizations jumped from 4.00 to 4.15.
- In the RN-to-RN Teamwork and Collaboration category, Magnet organizations scored roughly 4.40 in 2022 compared to 4.30 last year.
Although we’ve seen incredible strides in many areas, registered nurses at Magnet organizations experienced a slight decline in decompression from 2021 to 2022 (3.68 to 3.67, respectively). Scores among RNs in non-Magnet organizations increased from 3.66 to 3.72.
The last two years have been both difficult and eye-opening for nurses and their leaders, but we’re excited to see the light at the end of this long tunnel.
While scores for Magnet and non-Magnet organizations are still recovering to pre-COVID-19 levels in the engagement, decompression, and across ANCC categories, these preliminary findings show promise of a strong finish for Magnet organizations in 2022. But most importantly, the findings demonstrate the fundamental link between a supported, engaged, and resilient nursing workforce and organizational success.
